I quite like Spark but I can’t set up 0365 on it.

For me, it’s only the Archive folder (Archive 1 is created), which makes it unusable. Great review & I’m not sure whether to be pleased or not to hear that you, too get folders added when using Apple Mail.

Not sure why Airmail doesn't get more love in the Mac world as it's far and away the most capable Mac email client and one which lets you set everything up the way you want, not the way they decide it should be.

I even like the delete sound which is really satisfying. It feels very much like a Mac app and includes several themes including dark mode. Custom actions are awesome and can even hook into Applescript. The custom folder mapping features are excellent and mean you can get the various email accounts looking the way you want without messing with custom folder configurations. The custom inbox feature is terrific and lets you set-up virtual inboxes that contain email from specific addresses or domains, or which include specific subjects or content or in a date range. Airmail is great at letting you decide which emails you want to give most visibility to, with smart folders, actions, services and rules. It has first-rate alias functionality so you can add full-blown accounts or alias's and you can even specify to use the SMTP server for those alias's if required. It handles multiple accounts brilliantly and has a unified inbox view which is great. But for a few extra features in Airmail I'd still be using Postbox today.Īs to Airmail, it really is the email client that does it all. Search in Postbox is great and the afore-mentioned attachment view is awesome. Postbox is a very under-rated email client with some powerful features that focus on managing multiple email inboxes.

Also Spark's search was slow and not very effective. Why not give people the option? To do otherwise seems arrogant to me. In their support documentation on this subject they say that they have no plans to change this either. However they have rigid functionality decisions in place that are supremely irritating, such as the fact that you can't view an email thread with the most recent post at the top.

Spark is a terrific looking and very Apple-like app that handles multiple accounts really well.

Outlook 365 is a solid bit of software that has improved massively over the last few years and its integration with other Microsoft software is a big advantage but it's a clunky and unintuitive app that seems to wilfully hide the most useful functions in obscure menus/toolbars. MailPlane is okay if you only ever use Gmail, but other than that it's a quite clunky and not very Apple-like email client. That simplicity is an advantage to some and I set it up for my dad on his iMac for that precise reason and he's very happy about it. Mail has come a long way, but it still lacks the bells and whistles that make managing email easier. My thoughts on the various clients are this: Over the trial/testing period we gave all the afore-mentioned email clients a good week of proper use.

Previously I had been using Postbox which I was pretty happy with, particularly since it has an excellent attachments-only view which is brilliant for finding that long-lost PDF. I tested the new Monterey version of Mail, Outlook 365, Spark, MailPlane, Postbox and Airmail and the tl dr is that in the end we both settled happily on Airmail. During the testing I decided to switch email clients too, because I was so impressed with the software in question. My co-worker (the missus) is very particular about her requirement around emails and it was a tough job to find some software that worked the way she wanted. I recently went through an extended round of testing of all the better known email clients.
